Frosted glass, without new glass.
Frosting is a film applied to the pane already in the frame. The glass reads as sandblasted, the daylight still comes through, and nothing is replaced.
What is window frosting?
A film on the inside face of your existing glass that gives it an etched, sandblasted appearance. It obscures what can be seen through the pane at every hour of the day and still passes daylight. People ask for it for two different reasons, and which one you are is what decides the specification.
Which one are you?
The room needs to be private
A bathroom, an ensuite, a ground-floor bedroom, a street-facing consulting room. Frosting obscures the pane itself, so it holds after dark as well as at midday, which is why it is the usual answer where a reflective film would let you down at night.
The glass should look designed
Partitions, balustrades, reception glazing and manifestation. The same etched finish, specified as a band, a pattern or a full pane, and set out to the lines the architecture already has.
What frosting will not do.
Two of these decide whether frosting is the right film at all, and the third decides whether the quotation reads as good value or as a shortcut.
It obscures both ways
A frosted pane is not a one-way finish. It reduces what can be seen in and what can be seen out, equally. Where the outward view matters, a reflective film is usually the better answer, and that one brings its own limit after dark.
It is not a tint
Frosting diffuses light. It is not specified to reduce heat, and a frosted window in a west-facing room is still a west-facing room. If the heat is the actual problem, that is a different film.
The finish is the film, not the glass
Sandblasted and acid-etched glass are made that way in a factory, before the pane reaches the frame. Frosting is applied to the glass you already have, which is why it costs a fraction of replacement and can be changed later. Close up, and under raking light, the two are not identical.
